Three employees at the South Carolina Department of Corrections were terminated after being arrested on charges of sexual misconduct with inmates.
According to the Department of Corrections, the three employees, 56-year-old Crystal C. Haynes, 53-year-old Darcy A. Meade and 55-year-old Charthenia B. Smith, at Kershaw Correctional Institution were fired on Tuesday, after turning themselves in at the Lancaster County Detention on May 30.
Haynes was charged with first degree sexual misconduct with an inmate of a correctional facility.
Meade was charged with second degree sexual misconduct with an inmate of a correctional facility. Smith was charged with first degree sexual misconduct with an inmate of a correctional facility.
The arrests and termination of the employees at Kershaw Correctional Institution are the result of an extensive investigation by the Department of Corrections’ Inspector General’s Office and is ongoing.
Kershaw Correctional Institution is a Level 2, Medium Security prison that houses some 1522 inmates and has 262 employees.
