SC Indoor Winter Farmers Market begins Saturday

The holidays are over and the resolutions have been made. Whether it’s eating healthier, spending more time with family, or helping others, the place to begin working on these goals is at the SC State Farmers Market, 3483 Charleston Highway in West Columbia.

This coming Saturday, January 7, 2012, will be the first indoor Winter Certified SC Farmers Market of the season. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., visitors can enjoy shopping for locally grown or processed products in the warm and cozy comfort of the Corbett Building. What better way to get healthier and spend more time with the family and friends.

In addition to collards, cabbage, sweet potatoes, and other seasonal produce, the market vendors will offer cured ham hocks, cured bacon, 100% grass fed beef, and eggs. Other items unique to South Carolina that will be offered include: goat milk soap, shea butter, and body scrubs; soy candles, SC‐made painted crafts and jewelry; gourmet salt, rubs, baking and dessert mixes; honey, syrup, sauces, dips, jams, and jellies; cookies, cakes, breads and other baked goods; peanut brittle; frozen blueberries and pears; wine and juice; and other specialty products. There will be something for everyone.

Before or after shopping at the indoor farmers market, walk down the hall to Judy’s Restaurant for comfort food at its finest. The Fresh on the Menu restaurant offers everything from hand‐battered fried okra to red velvet cake made with lots of real butter. Everything is made from scratch – including the soup and cornbread.

Now through the end of January, for every bowl of soup sold in the restaurant and for every container of soup purchased to take home to enjoy on Super Bowl Sunday, Judy’s will make a contribution to the Souper Bowl of Caring, a nationwide effort that began at Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Columbia.

Market visitors are also invited to participate in the Souper Celebration by dropping their dimes and dollars into the soup pots and their canned goods and non‐perishable foods into collection containers. The Souper Bowl of Caring funds and foods will be designated for our own Harvest Hope. Another resolution promise kept-helping others.

Lunch hours are 11:00 a.m. to 3:00, so visitors can have lunch and shop til they drop at the Certified SC Winter

Farmers Market – all under one roof!
