June 13 - 17, the UniverSoul Circus will return to Columbia with a big top thrill-ride infused with an unparalleled global mix of circus artistry, music, dance and style – all inspired by reflections of the world around US.

The UniverSoul Circus 2012 production entitled “US” – featuring Shaolin Kung Fu acrobats from China, bone-breaking contortionists with a hop-hop flair from Guinea, hilarious acrobatic comedy from South Africa, and pro-style hip hop dancers from the United States – will be performing in Columbia in the parking lot Benedict College Football Stadium

American Red Cross to Hold Annual Platelet Donor Appreciation Event

The American Red Cross South Carolina Blood Services Region will recognize Florence and Columbia area platelet donors at a platelet donor appreciation breakfast 9:30-11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at The Zone at Williams-Brice Stadium, 1127 George Rogers Blvd., Columbia.

 

The event is an opportunity for the Red Cross to honor area platelet donors and award donors who have reached significant donation milestones.

The Mid-Carolina chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness has announced the host committee for its 5th Annual NAMIWalks 5k event on May 19, 2012 at the West Columbia Riverwalk. By joining the host committee, these local business, healthcare, media, & community leaders are voicing their support for NAMI Mid-Carolina and its mission to break the stigma of mental illness in the Midlands.

 “We’d like to see people become more comfortable with the subject of mental illness,” says NAMI Mid-Carolina President Jack Balling.

$5.25 Million S.C. BlueCross Grant presented to S.C. Free Clinics Statewide

The BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation presented a check for $5.25 million to the South Carolina Free Clinic Association (SCFCA) here today, enabling the 42 member clinics across the state to have a centralized, integrated and multifaceted support system.

 

The system will include such functions as establishing a statewide certification program and special projects to implement statewide or regional efforts that would strengthen individual clinics’ capabilities.
